Fort Smith Public Schools is proud to announce that fourth-grade teacher Misty McGatha Howard has been named the Howard Elementary Teacher of the Year. Known for her unwavering dedication to student success, Ms. McGatha sets high expectations for all learners and works tirelessly to ensure each student reaches their full potential.

Ms. McGatha’s approach to teaching is both strategic and student-centered. She reteaches essential skills by breaking them down into manageable steps and providing multiple practice opportunities. She holds students accountable for their learning goals, encouraging them to increase the number of books they read and improve their progress in Lexia and iReady. Her ability to engage students in their learning fosters a positive and productive classroom environment with minimal behavioral issues.

Beyond her classroom, Ms. McGatha is a role model for fellow educators. She is always willing to share her expertise and strategies for student success, staying after school to find valuable resources such as practice exams. Her dedication extends beyond academics as she works to spark a love for reading by helping students discover book series that keep them engaged and motivated. She also simplifies math concepts with helpful reference charts and increases student motivation.
